Not many school children get to sample foods from nine countries for their school lunch - but that is what the boys from Scoil Naomh Iosaf, Adare Boys School did recently as part of their Intercultural Day.
Through its pupils the school has links with nine countries – Australia, Poland, Bangladesh, Germany, France, Morocco, USA, England and of course, Ireland. The school decided to celebrate these links by holding an Intercultural Day recently.

The teachers viewed it as a fun and interactive way for the boys to learn about the countries and to celebrate the cultures of each of the pupils. School Principal Barry O'Riordan explains, “Each of the classes took an element of each country to research and prepare a presentation on – Junior and Senior Infants made flags and T-shirts while the older classes researched each countries geography, history, famous people, events and customs. All the information was displayed on charts and fabulous 3D models and the parents came to view the results.”
The international theme was reinforced by the pupils dressing in native costumes from each country and by an impressive display of flags outside the school. The parents gave wonderful support on the day and prepared a mouth watering menu of international foods to taste – hot dogs and brownies from the USA, Bangladeshi sweet and savoury breads, Moroccan cakes, German meatballs, Polish cheesecakes, French éclairs and croque monsieur and Irish stew to name a few.
